Manifesto

I generally don't like to have the terms "manifesto" and "conservative" in the same sentence, but Mark Levin has put them together and this is EXCELLENT! Here it is:

1. Taxation

Eliminate the progressive income tax-replace it with a flat income tax or national sales tax-for its purpose is to redistribute wealth, not fund the constitutionally legitimate functions of the federal government.

All residents of the country must be required to pay the tax so they have a stake in limiting its abuse.

Eliminate the automatic withholding of taxes, for it conceals the extent to which the federal government is confiscating income from its citizens.

Eliminate the corporate income tax, for it is nothing more than double taxation on shareholders and consumers, and penalizes wealth and job creation.

Eliminate the death tax, for it denies citizens the right to confer the material value they have created during their lives to whomever they wish, including their family.

All federal income tax increases will require a supermajority vote for three-fifths of Congress.

Limit federal spending each year to less than 20 percent of the gross domestic product.

I would add that if you really want people to understand the taxes they pay AND hold their elected representatives accountable, you would have income tax paid once a year, and it would be the same day as Election Day.

2. Environment.

Eliminate the special tax-exempt status granted to environmental groups, since they are not nonpartisan charitable foundations.

Eliminate special statutory authority granting environmental groups standing to bring lawsuits on behalf of the public, since their main purpose is to pursue the Statist’s agenda through litigation.

Fight all efforts to use environmental regulations to set governmental industrial policies and diminish the nation’s standard of living, such as “cap-and-trade” to regulate “man-made climate change.”

Let's be honest - the environmental movement is the last refuge of the socialists that tried to destroy the country during the Vietnam War. These groups have an agenda that would take us back to the Stone Age. There is room in the environmental agenda for a conservative view that would focus on preservation and sustainability...the proper maintenance of God's creation...and it should be pursued.

3. Judges

Limit the Supreme Court’s judicial-review power, which far exceeds the Framer’s intent, by establishing a legislative veto over Court decisions-perhaps a two-thirds supermajority vote of both houses of Congress, not dissimilar from the congressional override authority of a presidential veto.

Eliminate lifetime tenure for federal judges, given the extra-constitutional power they have amassed and their routine intervention in political and policy decisions-which the Constitution leaves to representative branches.

No judicial nominee should be confirmed who rejects the jurisprudence of originalism.

No argument here.

4. The Administrative State

Sunset all “independent” federal agencies each year, subject to Congress affirmatively reestablishing them.

Require federal departments and agencies to reimburse individuals and enterprises for the costs associated with the devaluation of their private property from the issuance of regulations that compromise the use of their property.

Eliminate unions for federal government employees, since the purpose of a civil service system is to promote merit and professionalism over patronage, and the purpose of federal unions is to empower themselves and promote statism.

Reduce the civilian federal workforce by 20 percent or more.

Great suggestions here. Especially the reduction in the workforce. I would add that we should institute performance incentive pay for Federal employees.

5. Government Education

Eliminate monopoly control of government education by applying the antitrust laws to the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers; the monopoly is destructive of quality education and competition and is unresponsive to the taxpayers who fund it.

Eliminate tenure for government schoolteachers and college/university professors, making them accountable for the quality of instruction they provide students.

Strip the statist agenda from curricula (such as multiculturalism and global warming) and replace it with the curricula that reinforce actual education and the preservation of the civil society through its core principles.

Eliminate the federal Department of Education, since education is primarily a state and local function.

Our education system has become a joke - it is at best a semi-effective daycare and at worst an indoctrination camp. Take the shackles off and let the states compete!

6. Immigration

Eliminate chain migration, which grants control over immigration policy to aliens and foreign governments, and which the Statist defends to expand his electoral and administrative state constituency.

Secure the nation’s borders and discourage those who violate them-illegal alien and citizen lawbreaker alike-by enforcing the immigration laws.

End multiculturalism, diversity, and bilingualism in public institutions, which beget poverty, animosity and ethnic balkanization; promote assimilation and unity of citizenship, allegiance to American culture, and English as the official language.

Exactly. I would only add that we should seek to encourage immigration to the United States by trades and skills that we need.

7. Entitlements

Social Security is going bankrupt. Medicare is going bankrupt. Medicaid is going bankrupt. These programs and others have accumulated more than $50 trillion in IOUs due end payable by subsequent generations. Educate the young people about the intergenerational trap the Statist has laid for them-which will steal their liberty, labor, opportunities, and wealth-and build a future electoral force for whom the elixir of entitlements is understood as a poisonous snake oil. These programs were created in politics and will have to addressed in politics. Only in this way can they be contained, limited and reformed.

Fight all efforts to nationalize the health-care system. National health care is the mother of all entitlement programs, for through it the Statist controls not only the material wealth of the individual but his physical well-being. Remind the people that politicians and bureaucrats, about whom they are already cynical, will ultimately have the final say over the choice of doctors, hospitals and treatment-meaning the system will be politicized and bureaucratized. Remind them that this human experiment has been tried and has failed in places like Britain and Canada, where patients have been subjected to arbitrary treatment decisions, long waiting periods for lifesaving surgeries, antiquated medical technologies, the denial of high-cost pharmaceuticals available elsewhere, and the inefficient rationing of health care generally. And remind them that despite past utopian promises, the Statist rarely delivers.

Here's a craaaaazy idea: let's fix what is already broke - Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid - FIRST, before we start a whole new system of flushing money down the drain.

8. Foreign Policy and Security

Ensure that all foreign policy decisions are made for the purpose of preserving and improving American society.

Reject all treaties, entanglements, institutions, and enterprises that have as their purpose the supplantation of America’s best interests, including its physical, cultural, economic, and military sovereignty, to an amorphous “global” interest.

Ensure that America remains the world’s superpower. Ensure that at all times America’s military forces are prepared for war to dissuade attacks, encourage peace, and, if necessary, win any war.

Doing! Might want to add a clause that spells out everyone we've apologized to and end the worldwide mea culpa tours. We have to act like grown ups in the world.

9. Faith

Oppose all efforts to denude the nation of its founding justification-that is, God-given unalienable, natural rights that the government can neither confer on the individual nor deny him. The Statist seeks the authority to do both, which explains his contempt for, or misuse of, faith. Moreover, faith provides the moral order that ties one generation to the next, and without which the civil society cannot survive.

John Adams spoke often about the need for a moral society founded in faith. Those without true faith will follow false prophets - how do you spell "Obama?" The republic depends on this.

10. The Constitution

Demand that all public servants, elected or appointed, at all times uphold the Constitution and justify their public acts under the Constitution.

Oppose all efforts to “constitutionalize” the statist agenda.

Eliminate limits on and rationing of political free speech through unconstitutional “campaign finance” laws, which benefit incumbent politicians, the media, unions, and other Statist-related groups. Any American citizen or group of American citizens should be free to contribute to candidates as they wish, as long as the source, amount, and recipient of the contributions are made known.

Defeat all efforts to unconstitutionally regulate the content of political speech on broadcast outlets, such as radio. The Statist now seeks to consolidate the power he has accumulated by silencing noncompliant voices through a variety of schemes that would regulate broadcast content.

President Reagan said, “Freedom is never more then one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

This noble document, our Constitution, is under full frontal assault. As I pen this, reports are coming over the wire about a bill working its way through the Senate that would give the President power to control the Internet...let's get back to the instruction manual now!

Levin has done an excellent job pulling this together. We should make this a rallying cry.

Here's a job for you:

1. Move overseas and pretend to be someone you are not. In particular, it would be great if you would move to such scenic countries as Pakistan, Russia or perhaps China.

2. Live there for 3-5 years establishing yourself as a "trade representative" of a major corporation from the United States, or perhaps, a visa officer at the local U.S. Consulate.

3. Befriend local officials and business leaders. Educate them on why you think that the United States' position towards their country is OK, but could be a lot better if only their country would work with us more.

4. After months of hard work, ask one of your new "friends" for some information about their company (could be an industrial manufacturer, could be a shipbuilder, could be a company involved in securing raw materials for their nation, etc.). Your request initially will be small, but over time, it will grow. You will want details and your "friend," will have begun to trust you...after all, nothing bad is happening.

5. Reveal to your friend that you work for the Central Intelligence Agency and that if they will help you get the mother lode of targeted information, you will whisk them out of their country and get them a new life in the land of milk and honey, aka, the United States.

6. Carry out your mission and return to the United States for a down cycle stateside. Bring your "friend" out at the same time and help him get a new life.

7. Bask in the knowledge that you have foiled a potential enemy's plans to do harm to your native land.

8. Get subpoenaed to appear before a Congressional sub-committee on intelligence that is looking into allegations that you might have been "harsh" with a contact or two while you were overseas trying to accomplish your mission.

9. Thousands of dollars in legal fees later, return to your job at the CIA at Langley.

10. Get subpoenaed by Eric Holder at the Justice Department who is looking intoallegations that you might have been "harsh" with a contact or two while you were overseas trying to accomplish your mission.

11. Watch as your "friend" is exposed and deported back to his native land. A youtube video two months later confirms he was sentenced to hard labor and died in a prison camp. Have THAT on your conscience.

12. Thousands of dollars in legal fees later, get sentenced to 10 years at Leavenworth for breaking a "protocol" that has been retroactively instated.

13. Watch loons from the Democrat party run to the press and crow about how "justice has finally been done!!"

14. As you are cuffed and being placed in the van to take you to the airport for your ride to Kansas, see President Obama on the TV screen saying it was out of his hands.

15. Know, sadly, that across the globe, thousands of agents, just like you are no longer pursuing their missions - they got the message from this Administration. America is exposed.

At what point do they stop dreaming up new programs to spend our money and worry about the commitments already made?

According to the International Co-Operative Statement on Co-operative Identity, a "co-operative," or "co-op" is:

an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlledenterprise.^[1] It is a business organization owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit.

Hmmm, let's parse that.

1. "Autonomous association of persons" - well what Congress (mainly Kent Conrad in the Senate) is proposing is a national association of uninsured persons who would join this "co-op" and would receive funding from Congress to make the pricing competitive. Kind of shoots the "autonomous" notion out of the saddle.

2. "united voluntarily" - if there is a mandate that says "you will have health insurance," there is nothing voluntary about it. Nor is the lack of health insurance necessarily an income related thing. Mark Perry, over at Carpe Diem, slays that argument with this simple chart:

That's right, almost 40% of the uninsured make MORE than $50K per year.

3. "jointly owned, and democratically controlled enterprise" - Puleeze!!! Do you really think that if Congress (the taxpayers) has to fund this "enterprise" to make it "competitive" that they are not going to be calling the shots? What size campaign contribution will I have to make in order to get "elected" to the Board?

4. "owned and operated by a group for their mutual benefit" - doubt it. Follow the money - if it's coming from Congress, it will be run by political appointees. They, in turn, will put their lackeys in place and voila, you got yourself a bureaucracy controlled and operated from Washington.

Where, oh where, is ANY of this in the Constitution? You know, that document that you raise your right hand for and say "protect and defend...against all enemies, foreign or DOMESTIC?"

Bottom line, the co-op idea is nothing but, dare I say it? Lipstick on the pig that is the "public option," which is lipstick on the pig that is "socialized medicine, which is lipstick on the pig that is this blatant power grab by Obama and his Democrat henchmen. This is the most left (statist) group of leaders at the helm in the history of this nation. Time for some real change.

Key Arguments in the Healthcare Debate

Excellent piece by Martin Feldstein over at the Wall Street Journal this morning titled "ObamaCare is all about rationing." He lays out in very clear terms (using the Administration's own words) why this plan will lead to a reduction of services:

One reason the Obama administration is prepared to use rationing to limit health care is to rein in the government's exploding health-care budget. Government now pays for nearly half of all health care in the U.S., primarily through the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The White House predicts that the aging of the population and the current trend in health-care spending per beneficiary would cause government outlays for Medicare and Medicaid to rise to 15% of GDP by 2040 from 6% now.

Key point here - a lot of those in favor of this so-called "reform," cite Medicare and Medicaid as "government run programs," and then cite the stats that say that a majority of those that receive Medicare are happy with it...this is government FUNDED healthcare, not government directed. They don't tell you which Doctor you have to see or that you cannot receive treatment. You want government involved in healthcare some more? Consider this:

But budget considerations aside, health-economics experts agree that private health spending is too high because our tax rules lead to the wrong kind of insurance. Under existing law, employer payments for health insurance are deductible by the employer but are not included in the taxable income of the employee.

Hmm, you mean TAX policy influences health care choices? This badly needed reform is not going to happen with the Dems in office - why? The usual two word answer: THE UNIONS:

The unions are particularly vehement in their opposition to any reduction in the tax subsidy for health insurance, since they regard their ability to negotiate comprehensive health insurance for their members as a major part of their raison d'être.

Finally, to the Chicken Littles who scream that we have to do something NOW!!! or we all DIE!!! and go BANKRUPT!!! Take a breather and listen:

Those who worry about too much health care cite the Congressional Budget Office's prediction that health-care spending could rise to 30% of GDP in 2035 from 16% now. But during that 25-year period, GDP will rise to about $24 trillion from $14 trillion, implying that the GDP not spent on health will rise to $17 billion in 2035 from $12 billion now. So even if nothing else comes along to slow the growth of health spending during the next 25 years, there would still be a nearly 50% rise in income to spend on other things.

Both sides are guilty of this faulty logic - the assumption of a static state. Assuming we can defeat health care and not knee cap our economy with the silly "cap and trade" legislation, there is a pretty good chance that this economy will start growing again.

Reform may be needed - heck, as Barney Frank himself said last night: "Medicare isn't bankrupt, it just needs more money." Perhaps the biggest thing we need in ths country is more rugged self-reliance. C'mon America, take the government pacifier out of your collective mouths and start living again! Reforming our overall tax policy so people had to pay their taxes quarterly out of their own pockets without employee hold backs would be a great first step to appreciating how much the government already takes from us and whether we should continue to pass "gimme, gimme, gimme some more" legisltation.

Canadian Medical Association: "Cut Surgeries!"

More good news from our socialist model medical system north of the border: "Thousands of surgeries may be cut in Metro Vancouver..." Just read the first two paragraphs of the article and it proves up everything that those of us opposed to Obamacare have been saying:

Vancouver patients needing neurosurgery, treatment for vascular diseases and other medically necessary procedures can expect to wait longer for care, NDP health critic Adrian Dix said Monday.

Dix said a Vancouver Coastal Health Authority document shows it is considering chopping more than 6,000 surgeries in an effort to make up for a dramatic budgetary shortfall that could reach $200 million.

Now according to estimates, there are roughly 33.7 million Canadians - about 2.1 million of them live in Metro Vancouver. Extrapolate these numbers out and that's close to 100,000 surgeries that are going to get "lopped" from the system. This is simple math folks, not rocket science. End this obamanation now and let's get down to truly addressing the problems in our healthcare system.

Conservative Nation

Despite the ravings of some opposition posters I get on here from time to time, Gallup has proven once again that we are still an overwhelmingly conservative nation:

This is something the Republican party should look at as well. Stop trying to win popularity contests with left stream media elites and get back to what the people want - you just might get elected! From the report:

Despite the Democratic Party's political strength -- seen in its majority representation in Congress and in state houses across the country -- more Americans consider themselves conservative than liberal. While Gallup polling has found this to be true at the national level over many years, and spanning recent Republican as well as Democratic presidential administrations, the present analysis confirms that the pattern also largely holds at the state level. Conservatives outnumber liberals by statistically significant margins in 47 of the 50 states, with the two groups statistically tied in Hawaii, Vermont, and Massachusetts.

The reality is that both parties are coalitions of disparate interests. The Democrats have the gays, the African-Americans, the pro-abortionists, the unions and their loon fringe, the America-haters. The Republicans have the country club types, the gun club types, the pro-life types and so on. Obama's hard core push to the left with Reid and Pelosi is starting to show that the fabric of the Democrat party can be just as easily shred as that of the Elephants. Say "no" to single-payer health care and out go the crazy left votes...fail to get some kind of "reform" passed and the moderates go over the side. Governing is a balancing act, but it is one that in a Constitutional Republic, like ours, the majority should carry the overall tenor of the debate. Perhaps with the tea parties and town hall protests, we are seeing the makings of a new Reagan coalition as Democrat constituents peel off in recognition that their party is the one that is driving the country over the cliff in the left lane.

Canadian Medical Association: "The System is imploding."

As the great philosopher, Jimmy Buffet, once said - "truth is stranger than fiction." I can't make this stuff up - here's the headline:

No, seriously...well that was worth the click to the article...wherein we learn that the Docs in Canada arent' happy with all that happy socialism that the Omeister is trying to shove down our throats. "You mean all is not perfect with socialized medicine?" Ya think!

Yumpin yiminee folks, everyone else in the world is trying to run away from socialism just as O and his team are trying to lure us into that happy land. The current head of the Canadian Medical Association is cited in the article saying:

Ouellet has been saying since his return that "a health-care revolution has passed us by," that it's possible to make wait lists disappear while maintaining universal coverage and "that competition should be welcomed, not feared."

In other words, Ouellet believes there could be a role for private health-care delivery within the public system.

He has also said the Canadian system could be restructured to focus on patients if hospitals and other health-care institutions received funding based on the patients they treat, instead of an annual, lump-sum budget. This "activity-based funding" would be an incentive to provide more efficient care, he has said.

Hmmm, health care revolution passed you by, eh? Our system may not be perfect, but the U.S. is on the tip of the sword of medical revolution thanks to a comparatively free system. You have to love the concept of funding hospitals based on their existence rather than their patient loads - only a bureaucrat could possibly engineer such a system.

Before we go turning our system topsy turvy, could we do two things? First, let's define the problem. If we do that, then we would have a metric to bounce any proposed legislation up against. Case in point: if the problem is the "uninsured," the current proposal DOESN'T solve it! Second, let's look around the world for something that works better than our current system and look at the systems that have been abject failures. Sitting here in Nashville, Tennessee, home of TennCare we know one system that does NOT work. Ditto for Hawaii, Massachusetts and now it appears, Canada. How about we NOT do what does NOT work?

It is so empirically obvious that government run healthcare does not work that you are left with the weird question: if O and the boys are sooooo smart, why would they try to foist on us something that does not work? Simple answer: ideology and power. It's all about securing a voting segment of the population that would be totally dependent on the government. Call that what you like, but that is not what is envisioned in the promise of America.

Sanity in the Senate?

Let's pray for some sanity in the Senate! According to Bloomberg, it looks like some of the Democrat Senators are coming to their senses and realizing that the Cap and Trade Bill is the ultimate "clunker:"

Climate legislation would require 60 votes in the Senate. Most Republicans have said they oppose the cap-and-trade measure, and at least 15 of the Senate’s 60-member Democratic majority have said the House-passed version would hurt the economy and needs to be revamped to win their support.

The fight is far from over and this is only one of the two enormous daggers pointed at the heart of the American economy - Healthcare being the second. As we reported here yesterday, Cap and Trade will cost almost 2.5 million jobs (minimum) and that doesn't include the ripple effect of the increased cost of goods - Homebuilders are saying that their cost of production will increase close to 25%. But at least it increases costs to everyday Americans too! What was that bit about "not taxing anyone making less than $250K?"

Rumbler's wishful thinking scenario is that both of these monstrosities go down in flames. The sheen will be off the Obamiester at that point and the Dems will be scrambling to a) assuage their hard left base because they didn't get the "good stuff" passed AND b) running to the center to get as far away from this closet-communist Obama, in the hopes of being re-elected.

It probably won't go down that neatly, but seeing the people out there in the streets, like I saw today at our Congressman's Town Hall - gives me faith. At the end of the day, the American people may have voted for "change," but they did not vote for "communism;" they did not vote to have their Constitution usurped and replaced by some SEIU/Bolshevik dogma. They are mad and they want their country back. Scary scenario? If this legislation passes...our chances to get the country back on track will be greatly diminished. As you reach the point where those that receive all the benefits of the state outnumber those that provide it, the numbers of the latter will decline. Then what? Look no further than the former Soviet Union for your answer.
